Sarah Mae,
Thanks for your comments. I did want to address your point in my post but try to limit my wording so as to make it an easy read. My simple answer to your question was given to me by Tim Keller. Dr. Keller noted that Jesus never placed a specific amount or command on giving; the reason was so that we, as moralist people, would not create a law whereby we could say, "I gave enough or I met the righteous requirements of giving!" Jesus commended Zacheus for giving 50% and yet he commanded the rich young ruler to give 100%, and then in His hyperbolic way Jesus commands everyone who follows Him to give all, even our very lives in order to truly keep what is truly life. Thus the imperative falls upon us to seek the Lord, trust His promises, while obeying His commands. We will always look for a law on how much to give.... Jesus will not permit us to fall into that trap. Hope this helps. There are rich and marvelous promises to those who live for Him.

I wrestle back and forth with this issue! In the OT it seems like, in Proverbs, the emphasis really is on the wisdom of saving, being out of debt, etc. In the NT it seems like the emphasis is on giving. How do you balance this? Still learning myself!
